According to Verizon national accounts manager Douglas Glenn, “Most educators realize the inevitability of mobile device learning and the huge impact it will have on how students learn 21st century skills …Today’s youth expect ubiquitous access to their lessons, allowing them to complete course work on a mobile device any time, anywhere.”

The quote was in response to questioning about a new Florida law requiring that all K-12 instructional materials be provided in digital format by the 2015-2016 school year. The law opens the door for tablets to replace traditional textbooks, which, according to estimates from the Association of American Publishers, are estimated to cost more than $8 billion a year.

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview and Windows 8 Metro App Store were both made available to the public last week.  If you’ve read any tech journals – or mainstream content for that matter –  you can find numerous reviews and opinions about what is on offer and what it will mean for Microsoft and mobile computing. Will Windows 8 address what has been viewed as a weakness on small form factor optimization up till now?

The general consensus is that Window 8 is a dramatic departure from what Microsoft has traditionally been focused on.  With a new view on how to interact with devices, Win8 is ultimately bringing a new experience to users of this new OS.

But does Windows 8 provide enough of an elegant user interface that can compete against any other OS or experience?  Read more

Google VP Dishes On Android Tablet and App Strategy
Android is huge here at Mobile World Congress. There are Android phones and tablets everywhere, but we still aren’t seeing a lot of Android tablets in American consumers’ hands. Enterprise organizations are on high alert for the upcoming release of tablets powered by the Windows 8 operating system. It seems like Microsoft may finally realize the vision for tablet PCs that it first championed back in 2002, and it’s likely that the new devices will be put into heavy rotation in business environments worldwide.

In a February 17, 2012 Business Insider article, author Matt Rosoff explains why former Microsoft developer Hal Berenson believes that Windows 8 tablets will do better in enterprises than the iPad, which of course relies on the Apple iOS. He summarizes Berenson’s good arguments as follows: Read more

Android Takes iPhone Battle to Office, Narrows Security Gap

Google Inc.’s Android, having become the most popular smartphone software among consumers, is set to gain traction with businesses as SAP AG and VMWare Inc. help iron out security kinks.

Software companies attending the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week are displaying solutions designed to prevent corporate data from being compromised when employees use their personal phones for work. Samsung Electronics Co., the biggest maker of Android phones, says reducing that risk would give it a chance to overtake Apple Inc. in the enterprise business.

“We recognized that we need a new growth agenda for Samsung, which is going to enterprise,” said Bum-coo Cho, who heads Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung’s enterprise business team. “Samsung will put a significant amount of effort into generating business from the enterprise sector.”

Federal technology managers expect an average of about 20 percent of their agencies’ employees will be using computer tablets professionally in 2013, according to a new survey by MeriTalk, a government IT industry group.

That’s up from about 7 percent in 2011, MeriTalk said.

The survey projects a smaller increase in smartphone use from 35 percent of agency employees in 2011 to 43 percent in 2013. It projects laptop use will basically hold steady at 47 percent of agency employees.

The survey of 152 federal IT managers had a margin of error of about 8 percent, MeriTalk said.

Survey respondents cited increased productivity and easier telework as their top reasons for adopting mobile technology, followed by IT hardware cost savings and improved disaster recovery.
