When it comes to Android tablets, everybody talks about the apps.  One of the largest attractions for Android users is the many choices of apps.  With the Android eco-system reaching new heights with over 400,000 apps and counting, the biggest challenge a user can face is trying to determine which app is the best and will actually solve the problem that they need solved.

A trickier question for an Android tablet user is finding the right tablet optimized apps.  Apps that take advantage of the larger screens that are found on most Android tablets. Many apps that were designed for phones are simply ported to support tablets without really thinking through how to leverage these larger screens in a fundamentally different way.  Finding the tablet apps that meet the need of the end user whether they are a consumer or an enterprise class customer who needs access to critical business tools is a real challenge for tablet adopters. A full-sized keyboard will most likely always be your best bet for extensive writing assignments, but students and teachers are finding interesting uses for the digital pens that are available for many slate tablets and convertible laptop/tablet hybrids.

All students with tablets can use apps like MyScript Notes Mobile for Android or Microsoft OneNote for iOS to take notes in class. Evernote is another note-taking application that works on multiple platforms.

Computer makers Lenovo and Acer are reportedly planning to release tablet devices running the Windows 8 platform from Microsoft and sporting Intel chips known as Clover Trail. A DigiTimes report quoted sources in the “upstream supply chain” as saying that PC players are putting more hope on Intel’s Clover Trail platform as Medfield, designed by Intel for Android-based smartphones and tablet PCs, is “eclipsed by ARM-based processors in terms of performance and power saving.”

The report also says the combined Windows and Intel (Wintel) tablets could be available in the third quarter, finding strong demand in the enterprise as tablet sales grow and users familiar with Microsoft applications look for a platform they are familiar with. Acer and Lenovo join other technology giants, including Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Microsoft mobile platform partner Nokia in their plans for a Windows-based tablet to rival Apple’s iPad.

Clover Trail is a follow-on to Medfield–due in the second quarter–which is aimed primarily at smartphones. While the Medfield chip will undoubtedly be used in some tablets, it is a single-core design, while Clover Trail will also be offered in dual-core versions, making it more attractive for tablet makers, according to sources.

And Intel is expected to show off–either publicly or privately–Clover Trail-based prototype tablets running on Windows 8 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) later this month.

Why Windows 8 Tablets Will Surprise Everyone

Indeed, Microsoft has a troubled tablet history that the public isn’t soon to forget. This November, Forrester released a study that showed consumer interest in a Windows-based tablet dropped significantly this year. At the start of 2011, 46 percent of potential tablet owners wanted a Windows device. By Q3, that number slipped to 25 percent.

Forrester’s report stated, “Windows 8 hasn’t entered the consciousness of tablet buyers yet.”

That’s a shame because Gadget Lab has seen a Windows 8 tablet in action, and the experience opened our eyes to just how useful — and, yes, even fun — a Windows 8 tablet might be. Sure, Microsoft was demoing a mere reference design, but what we saw was so intriguing, we’re legitimately excited to see final, shipping products.

The proliferation of mobile applications is changing the way we do business, but it has its drawbacks for companies that provide tablets to employees or let employees use their own tablets on the job.

Downloading mobile apps increases the risk that Trojans and other malware will find their way into your corporate network. Malware in mobile apps is on the rise, and at least one expert, Roger Thompson of ICSA Labs (hired as the company’s first “Chief Emerging Threats Researcher”), is predicting that 2012 will be “the new age of malware.” Read more
