The rapidly changing mobile space
The mobile space moves at breakneck speed, especially the last few years. We have seen the cell phone go from an expensive business tool to a gadget that is owned by most people. The giant brick mobile phone evolved into the thin slice of today’s smartphone. Never in history have so many of the world’s population held so much computing power in their hands, and the presence of social networks brings world events to our pockets.

Today, Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android are the dominant operating systems in tablets. Predictions abound as to which one will come out ahead in the long run: Droid tablets are enjoying a surge these days, due in large part to their lower price tags, growing number of applications, and variety of available devices.

A recent Nielson survey of smartphone owners shows that 43 percent own an Android device; 28 percent have iPhones; 18 percent have BlackBerrys; and 11 percent have something else. Could the same thing happen with tablets? It wasn’t that long ago that the Apple iPad enjoyed a 95% market share, which is currently down to 67% according to Strategy Analytics.

Client appointments. Cold calls. Information gathering. Unplanned emergencies. The only thing typical about a day in the life of a field sales representative is that there’s nothing typical about it. Variety is the spice of field sales, and being able to turn on a dime makes it an exciting career.

Tablets are helping field sales reps do even more in their already fast-paced days. All-day batteries, instant on functionality, and lightweight portability are among the features that are making the tablet form factor a handy supplement to a laptop.

Here’s a hypothetical, but not unreasonable, look at how a tablet has been incorporated into the daily life of a “typical” field sales rep. Read more

The Business Tablet Trend
Enterprises are adopting tablets — some companies, groups, and industries faster than others. Many are iPads with Apple enterprise tools, advice and support. However, Windows has a much larger footprint in the enterprise, particularly on laptops and desktops. So will Windows 8 speed or slow overall enterprise adoption of tablets and find niches that the other OSes couldn’t penetrate?

We won’t know for sure what will be in Windows 8, or when, until more is officially announced and released. Current rumors based on an allegedly leaked roadmap peg the Windows 8 beta for CES 2012 (January), the Windows 8 release candidate at MIX 2012 (spring), and commercial rollout in August. Even then, it’s a matter of how well things work in the form of a tablet operating system, and how consumers feel about them.
