Enterprise Apps to Watch for in the Months Ahead

Now that tablets are firmly entrenched in the enterprise, expect to see an influx of mobile productivity applications designed specifically for the slate form factor.

Late last year, we saw the introduction of apps like Adobe Touch for creative professionals and IBM’s seven new social networking and collaboration apps designed to “address 21st century workforce trends.”

Salesforce.com’s anticipated Touch.salesforce.com promises to be “Everything you love about Salesforce. Redesigned for touch.” That should make David Willis, the chief of research for communications at Gartner, happy. Willis was quoted as saying that mobile versions of popular business applications “will only be successful if they redesign the apps, rather than just duplicating the traditional desktop or browser experience.” Read more

I came across this presentation, from Karan Bhujbal in India, that has some interesting statistics about how, where, and to what extent people are connecting with tablets.

My favorite slide is number 26, at the end, which plots tablets on the Gartner Hype Cycle. Developed by the analyst firm, the Gartner Hype Cycle is “a graphic representation of the maturity and adoption of technologies and applications, and how they are potentially relevant to solving real business problems and exploiting new opportunities.” Read more

In a session at Gartner Symposium yesterday, Gartner’s David Cearley listed the top ten strategic technology trends that the research and advisory company think will impact IT departments most of the next year.
