A recent Forrester study found that 44 percent of executives, 30 percent of salespeople and 24 percent of global information workers report using tablets for work. It’s no longer a matter of if your enterprise should invest in tablets, but when.

But enterprise IT departments have to choose between an increasingly broad range of operating systems. To select the right one, they have to base this decision on the unique and complex needs of their business.

Remember the days when employees had no choice about their PCs and other technology tools? Once mobile devices and sleek, attractive notebooks hit the consumer market, employees started demanding comparable technology. Users complained that dated, bulky computers hurt their productivity and failed to meet all their needs. And, if they couldn’t get “cool” devices from their employers, they started bringing their own to work.

If you work in enterprise IT, this can make you crazy, as I discussed in a recent post. That’s one of the reasons I’m really looking forward to seeing how consumers and enterprises take to Microsoft Windows 8. Boasting a variety of benefits for both IT professionals and end users, Windows 8 is expected to arrive this October and bridge the divide.

Attention Windows 8 shoppers: Windows 8 tablets and tablet/laptop hybrids built on Intel architecture will be in retail stores in November, according to a CNET story that cites a source close to Windows 8 device makers.

These devices will be using Intel’s newest Atom chips, named Clover Trail, which are the chip-maker’s first dual-core Atom design based on 32-nanometer processing. Windows 8 devices will be powered by chips from both Intel and AMD and will be able to run older “legacy” applications.

The new ThinkPad, not yet officially announced, will feature a touch screen and physical keyboard, allowing it to convert from laptop to tablet, Peter Hortensius, president of Lenovo’s product group, said. Hortensius said he hopes the new line will appeal to business people who carry multiple devices, and to CIOs looking for a Windows-based mobile platform.

“We’re seeing a lot of enterprise users carry a tablet, a phone and a notebook,” Hortensius said. “And there isn’t a good reason for why they should have to carry all three.”

The design of the enterprise device likely will be similar to that of the consumer-oriented Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga tablet, which the company showcased at January’s Consumer Electronics Show. The device has a hinge that allows the laptop-style keyboard to fold behind the screen when not in use, turning the device into a tablet.
