Mobile expense management company Xigo commissioned telecom industry association CCMI to carry out the study, which found that only 9% of businesses have been able to cut expenditure by deploying some kind of BYOD program.

Another 67% saw no difference with expenditure, while 24% somehow saw an increase in spending after putting a BYOD plan in place. More than half of enterprises (60%) are still in charge of purchasing, managing and securing smartphones and tablets for their employees, while also paying the monthly network fees.

Shifting IT Delivery to Tablets: The Strategic Issues

A few weeks ago the IT analyst firm Forrester made what is probably the first major declaration that tablets will soon become the primary computing device for most users, even going so far as to say that they will ‘rule’ personal computing in the near future. While I think the numbers speak for themselves on this, I also believe that many organizations are either unready or unwilling to hear this yet.

Part of the reason for this avoidance is because of the substantial overhaul it will require IT departments to undergo, and major change is invariably painful and difficult. This retooling includes the full gamut of IT responsibilities: Infrastructure, architecture, processes, tools, skills, and governance, right when so many companies are also dealing with many other generational IT disruptions.

BYOD: How to Manage a New Era of IT Support for Employee-owned Mobile Devices

BYOD sounds like a recipe for happy hour. But in today’s enterprise environment, BYOD – or bring your own device – is less than a happy occasion for the IT staff.

Executives and employees alike are purchasing their own iPhones, iPads and Android-based smartphones and tablets, and increasingly using these devices for both work and pleasure. As a result, a figurative tidal wave of employee-owned mobile devices is flooding the enterprise workspace. There are distinct benefits to employees using devices with which they’re comfortable – they improve productivity and employee satisfaction. And BYOD is enabling enterprises to reduce their mobile expenses.

Despite these advantages, allowing employees to use their personal devices can introduce a number of complexities for the enterprise IT staff. Not only does it add to the tasks of already-overburdened IT employees, but if not managed properly BYOD can introduce security concerns and require greater in-house expertise for support and management of a wider array of technology.

The new ThinkPad, not yet officially announced, will feature a touch screen and physical keyboard, allowing it to convert from laptop to tablet, Peter Hortensius, president of Lenovo’s product group, said. Hortensius said he hopes the new line will appeal to business people who carry multiple devices, and to CIOs looking for a Windows-based mobile platform.

“We’re seeing a lot of enterprise users carry a tablet, a phone and a notebook,” Hortensius said. “And there isn’t a good reason for why they should have to carry all three.”

The design of the enterprise device likely will be similar to that of the consumer-oriented Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga tablet, which the company showcased at January’s Consumer Electronics Show. The device has a hinge that allows the laptop-style keyboard to fold behind the screen when not in use, turning the device into a tablet.
